Bakkarwals |

|
At
sundown, the sheep
reunite at the end of their grazing session., with their young lambs.
The bleating sounds of very young lambs getting back to their
equally emotional mothers rents the air, reverberating in the mountains
around. Most Bakkarwal families have sheep ranging
from
five onwards, the average being about 50. Though when they
move
during their migrations together, there might even be more than 300
sheep, belonging to several kinsmen collectively. Bakkarwals are unable
to compete with the stock imported from outside the state. Their main
sale is during the festival of Id, when local Muslim population prefer
healthy sheep for sacrifice. |
